Pemberton Park Project Details

pembertonpark

Pemberton Park is a unique Section 8 housing facility for “grandfamilies.” In order to live at this facility, the senior adult residents must have legal custody of their grandchildren. Living on less than a $1,000 a month means there’s no extra money for computers or an Internet subscription. That leaves over 70 school children who live there with a serious academic disadvantage.

Connecting for Good’s Pemberton Park project will use wireless technology to support in-home broadband Internet for the entire property. Wi-Fi access will available in both buildings. One is four stories tall and the other is three stories. There are 36 apartments in all. An updated ten PC networked computer lab/classroom will also be outfitted.

The 20 Mbps shared Internet connection will be supplied through a pair of dishes to a wireless Internet service provider. The property will be connected to their data center through line-of-sight microwave dishes. The two buildings will be linked using compact dish antennas that operate on the 5GHz frequency. High power UniFi Wi-Fi access points will be installed on all floors of both buildings.  The access points will connect to the network inside the buildings using Ethernet cabling.

Connecting for Good will install a high quality refurbished PC in every apartment.  These computers with Wi-Fi cards installed have registered copies of Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Student Edition. A similar configuration will be used in the 10 PC computer lab and classroom with the addition of the Deep Freeze remote management application to ensure they remain virus and malware free.

The computer lab/classroom will be used for regular training sessions conducted by Connecting for Good staff and volunteers, as well as other community partners. The goal is to help the grandparents learn about computers so they can assist the children in their care with their homework. Teaching them about the Internet, e-mail and social media will also equip the grandparents to take advantage of all the benefits of being online.
